Late last week, Japan was rocked by a catastrophic earthquake and tsunami taking numerous lives and causing millions of dollars in damage. Thousands of families are without homes and still in dire need of our help. Tungsten World is proud to be an American owned business. Summertime brings us some amazing holidays that we take great pride in recognizing. We wanted to take a moment to share with our readers a short history lesson about the origin of this glorious holiday we have upon us.
Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement of American workers. It is a national holiday to honor the contributions workers have made to the well-being of The United States of America.
The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City. In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday and the Central Labor Union recommended that other organizations in other cities follow the example and celebrate a “workingmen’s holiday” on that day. The word spread with the growth of labor groups and organizations, and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of our nation.
Fast forward to present day and Labor Day still represents the strength and prosperity workers have contributed to our nation and its subdivisions. Go forth this weekend and celebrate however you see fit. Be safe and don’t forget the origins of this significant holiday weekend! Happy Labor Day from all of us here at Tungsten World!
